Looking to go to Chicago in a few weeks to take my son to visit some schools downtown. When I lived there years ago, based plane at Waukegan (KUGN) but we lived up by Gurnee. Since downtown access is the goal, I'm looking at other potential airports.
Calls to PWK and MDW reveal some pretty high fees ($100/night, etc.) even for CAA members. GYY seems to be fee-free but a bit of a drive to downtown.
Any recommendation from those who live in the area or fly in to Chicago regularly.
thanks,
Dave

I’ve been very happy at GYY.  It’s extremely easy to get into the city from there.

Dave,

You may wish to check out the GYY FBO info on Airnav.com and contact one or both FBOs for options. Imagine they will be happy to assist your mission objectives.

Seems like it may be the most economical if not the most convenient option.

Attached one comment from there and the link below.

My recommendation is JA Air Center at ARR. It’s a little further out but as long as you don’t hit the roads during rush hour it’s a straight in shot to downtown via 88.
The facility is first class as is the staff.

Dave,

Your only real choices now that our former Mayor Daley closed Meigs Field are Gary, IN (KGYY) really not to far, Midway (KMDW) fairly close but busy and expensive, Chicago Executive (KPWK formerly known as Palwaukee), KARR (Aurora, IL) pretty far, DuPage (KDPA) pretty far or Waukegan (KUGN) really far. Airnav or your contract fuel provider can give you current pricing. There really are not great close in alternatives.

Dave: On of my daughters attended a Chicago area college. Tried various options over the years, would recommend GRYY and taking train into town. Brett

Like others, my Chicago visit with my family was to GYY. Jet Center staff drove us over to the train and picked us up on the return, it was an easy ride into downtown. Check the train schedules to see if they comport with your schedule. We were tourists at the time, so depending on your specific plans a car might be easier, but it was all reasonably hassle free flying in and out of GYY.

Thanks Brett.  I’m leaning that way although Ken Sutton’s plane is up in GRB and he’s offered to let me use his hangar at DPA if I want.  Issue is we’d then need to rent a car which is a pain given the fact once we get downtown we’ll take the L or cab it everywhere.

What school did your daughter go to?  My son has been accepted to DePaul (along with some others) but right now it looks like that is his first choice even though he’s never visited the school…

Dave: Daughter attended University of Chicago. When we would visit, a stay in town was the norm rather than attempting a visit to the Hyde Park area.... Beware of parking if you do rent a car, can end up costing as much as a hotel. Uber also works extremely well in that area.

Daughter absolutely fell in love with Chicago area, in NYC grad school but still prefers the second city and visits when able. Brett
