Headed out to Arizona for the holiday and my brother wants us to fly down to Bisbee (P04) on a sightseeing trip. The airport looks fine (6K runway) but it looks like the airport is just north of the Mexico border with southbound departures needing to make an immediate turn on takeoff and northbound landings needing to fly a tight pattern. Anyone ever flown a Mits (or anything else for that matter) into Bisbee and have some first hand recommendation?

Thanks,
Dave

Way back I flew my Seneca in there, super easy, just turn quickly...the border is pretty close but no big deal. From what I recall theres minimal services there.

Thanks Ken.  My brother’s friend apparently has a house/ranch/something there and the idea was to fly down and visit.  I just wasn’t sure looking at the charts and comments on airnav if getting in or out is that big of a deal.  Not concerned about the terrain, but being from the land of the DC SFRA, I’m ultra-paranoid about crossing lines I’m not supposed to…

Flown there numerous times. It is a great place to go and there are no issues with crossing the border on takeoff. Have had to do it in even in my Bonanza. Just make an immediate right or left hand turn and it is a non issue...no courtesy cars though so you will have to call for a taxi.

No problem.  Apparently a friend of my brothers has a house/ranch/something down there and we’re going to meet up with him, so ground transport isn’t an issue.   Looks like Pinal Airpark (MZJ) might be worth stopping in to walk around and see the old airliners.  You ever fly in there?  Any tips?

Dave

Pinal Airpark is pretty amazing. I have landed and taxied around but did not get down. I believe there is a military installation there so do not know if one can. I can find out though. Pima air and Space museum is pretty amazing as well.

I used to spend a lot of time there when Evergreen Air Center was based there. Del Smith had his collection of old warbirds and tanks there. Had free run of these base in the old days. Believe Evergreen left long ago and moved the collection to Oregon along with the Spruce Goose.

Have been to Pima and the boneyard, thought I’d check out Pinal.  I tried driving there once and it’s closed off, but Airnav shows it as a public use airport and apparently some have flown in there and looked around.  If you have any intel, would appreciate it.

Did you go to Bisbee or get... diverted?
Bisbee is an awesome town. Total gem nestled in a mountain ravine with lots of great restaurants.

Pinal Airpark.. lol. The only airport I have been escorted back to the runway (twice), at gunpoint, and "asked" to skedaddle.
